About the USF CTPE Data Analytics Bootcamp

With more data being created daily, and with up to 73% of enterprise data not being used at all, companies are realizing that talented data analysts can provide them a competitive advantage and are hiring data analysts as a result.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) expects the field to grow 25% between 2020 and 2030, significantly outpacing the national average of 8%. With median pay of $82,360, data analysts enjoy a good salary with the option to grow into more lucrative roles, such as data architect or data scientist, as they gain experience and new skills. Ranked on Glassdoor’s Best Jobs in America list for 2021, there’s never been a better time to pursue a career in data analytics.

In the USF CTPE Data Analytics Bootcamp, created in partnership with Microsoft, you’ll learn the technical skills needed to be an analyst: fundamental business statistics, analytics and visualization tools, and advanced analysis techniques.

You’ll also hone your strategic thinking, an area hiring managers tell us most job seekers lack, with about 50% of the curriculum focusing on this critical training. You’ll complete 20+ hands-on mini-projects and a capstone project, rounding out an impressive portfolio that can be shared with hiring managers.

In this Florida Data Analytics bootcamp, you’ll be deciding when and how you learn, but you won't ever be doing it alone. You’ll be supported by a student advisor and an industry mentor, who you’ll regularly meet for 1-on-1. You’ll also have access to a career coach and optional career curriculum.

Structured Foundations

The structured foundations approach is the foundation you’ll use to come up with a data-oriented solution to any business problem.

No matter what industry you’re in, if you're able to master the ability to frame problems in a structured, data-driven way, you’ll always come out on top.

  • Develop an understanding of the HDEIP Framework and the Five-Step Problem Solving Approaches

  • Learn how to use SMART principles to create a problem statement worksheet

  • Become comfortable creating Mutually Exclusive Collectively Exhaustive (MECE) Issue Trees

  • Develop an understanding of Value Driver Trees

Visualization Tools

Visualization Tools such as Power BI are critical tools used in the Presentation Phase of the HDEIP Framework. While upfront analysis is very important work, ultimately, how this information is presented, visualized, and consumed determines whether your analysis will be adopted or shelved.

  • Develop an advanced ability to use two visualization tools: Tableau and Power BI

  • Practice using functions data analysts use on a daily basis

  • Use Power BI and Tableau to craft powerful, impactful stories

Data Connectivity

While working through this section of the course, you’ll learn how to leverage Structured Query Language (SQL) to query relational database management systems. In other words, you use queries to understand the data contained in databases. Here’s one example. Let’s say you’re a data analyst assessing underperforming malls. You’d write a query to analyze daily foot traffic data stored in the malls’ databases.

  • Develop the ability to explain the nuances of a database and how it relates to set theory

  • Write best practice queries in SQL

  • Practice using SQL with real data to extract insights to be presented to an audience

Capstone Project

In the capstone, you’ll work with your mentor to choose a data set from an industry that interests you. The goal of the capstone is to analyze the data and provide business recommendations to executives that can help shape the organization’s financial or strategic drivers. You’ll state your hypothesis, prove or disprove it, and package all of these insights into a presentation that you’ll deliver to your mentor. This capstone project can be the foundation of your portfolio which you can show to hiring managers.

  • Creating hypotheses and drawing a data hierarchy map

  • Extracting data from relational databases using SQL

  • Cleaning data using Python

  • Mastering presentation personas

Optional career units are offered at strategic points within the curriculum. You’ll also have access to a 1-on-1 career coach who can help you create a tailored job search strategy. With your coach, you can discuss topics like:
